They Used One Fewer Exclamation Point. Your Brain Opened an Investigation.
They usually text: “Sounds good!!”
Today they text: “Sounds good!”
OMFG Why only one exclamation point? Did something happen? Was the last conversation weird? Were you too much? Did you say something? Should you ask?
Sound familiar?
Let’s casually send something else so we can analyze that response too. ….. The investigation has expanded.
This is the particular species of nonsense that inspired Raven’s Rejection Reset, my free card deck for those moments when your brain takes uncertainty and starts writing fan fiction about it.
The problem isn’t noticing things. It’s deciding what they mean.
You probably did notice a difference. Maybe somebody answered more briefly. Maybe their energy seemed different. Maybe a client gave you criticism. Maybe someone hasn’t answered yet. Maybe an interaction actually was awkward.
The observation itself isn’t necessarily wrong.
The problem starts one step later:
Observation: They haven't texted back.
Interpretation: They're upset with me.
Brains hate an unfinished storyline, so the interpretation starts behaving like evidence. You’re not responding to silence anymore. You’re responding to “they’re upset with me.”
This is why one of the basic ideas behind the cards is separating what happened from what you inferred happened. The deck repeatedly brings you back to that distinction instead of asking you to pretend you suddenly feel serene about everything.
Raven actually makes perfect sense here
Raven is usually treated like the emotionally controlled one. Her entire character works because there is a massive difference between what is happening inside and what she chooses to do outside. That distinction matters.
The goal isn't:
I must never feel embarrassed, rejected, nervous, uncertain or weird again.
The useful question is:
Do I need to act on this feeling right now?
Stillness isn’t the absence of an internal reaction. It’s refusing to hand that reaction the keys to the car.
The visual idea behind this whole project came from exactly that contrast: composed Raven on the outside while internally we are conducting an unnecessary forensic investigation into a text message.
Your brain loves a closed case
Uncertainty is annoying. “I don’t know” leaves the story unfinished. Your brain loves to fill in blanks.
They didn’t reply because they’re mad. The meeting felt weird because you embarrassed yourself. The criticism means you’re bad at your job. The person used a period because the relationship is apparently entering its final act.
And once you have an explanation, everything gets interpreted through it. A shorter reply becomes more evidence. A delayed reply becomes more evidence. A neutral expression becomes more evidence.
Soon you’re basically prosecuting a case in which you are the detective, defendant, witness and deeply unqualified judge.
This is also why reassurance can become such a seductive little trap.
You ask: “Are we okay?” They say yes. Relief. Then some time passes.
The uncertainty creeps back in. Maybe they only said yes because.. And now we require another deposition.
The Raven deck has a card specifically for Reassurance Hunting because repeating the question doesn’t necessarily produce new information.
Sometimes it just temporarily quiets the question. The finished card asks you to pause before asking again and notice whether you’re actually seeking information or trying to make uncertainty disappear.
the conversation autopsy
You remember something you said. Hours later. Days later or even weeks later. Why did I say it like that? Was that weird? Maybe they took it the wrong way. I should have said... Now we are editing dialogue from an event that has already aired. No new information has arrived. But internally we have commissioned the director’s cut.
The deck calls this The Conversation Autopsy, ya know. When you reopen a completed interaction and poke it repeatedly to determine whether it secretly contains proof that everyone hates you.
You may have said something awkward. Off kilter Off beat. We do that. But is it there anything to respond to now?
Replaying an interaction and responding to an interaction are not the same activity.
Perfection is another attempt to control the outcome
The perfect text.
Write it. Edit it. Delete one sentence. Put it back. Change “okay” to “sounds good.” Wait, does “sounds good” seem passive-aggressive? Add an emoji. Remove the emoji because now you look desperate. Send. Immediately reread.
Does this sound like you?
If I communicate perfectly, nobody can misunderstand or reject me.
Unfortunately, there is no punctuation that signals clarity to another human all the time. You can communicate clearly. You can be accurate. You can decide what you mean. You cannot completely control what somebody else does with it. That is one of the resets built into the deck too.
The sneakiest version is rejecting yourself first
This one doesn’t always look like overthinking. Sometimes it looks practical.
“I wont get that job, gig, role, panel, part etc.”
“They probably aren’t interested.”
“They’ll say no.”
“So why bother?”
I know what you did ….
You have protected yourself from possible rejection by converting it into guaranteed rejection. You don't apply. You don't pitch. You don't ask. You don't flirt. You don't invite. Nobody rejected you. Nobody got the opportunity. Including the person who might have said yes. That is why the central line running through this entire project became:
Stop rejecting yourself on everyone else’s behalf.
Not because everyone will say yes. They won't.
Not because every fear is irrational. It isn't.
And definitely not because you need to become some permanently unbothered creature …..
Let the other person actually make their decision before you make it for them.
So I made Raven’s Rejection Reset
I wanted something you could use during the ridiculous part.
Not after you’ve spent 45 minutes hyperventilating over why you shouldn't be doing the thing you're currently doing.
The deck gives you a set of recognizable spirals, a Raven reset, and something concrete to do next. The current shopdownload includes an instruction card and the reset cards designed to live on your phone or be printed individually.
This isn't meant to diagnose you. The current term is Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. I’m not gonna pretend I really know how to medically describe it. I’m not a neuropsychologist.
These patterns can show up in a lot of different contexts, and recognizing yourself in one does not magically hand you a clinical label. That distinction was deliberate from the beginning of the project.
It’s a pattern interrupt.
When silence starts feeling like evidence.
When criticism feels like concrete coming down on your entire character.
When you’re rewriting emojis ferociously over and over
And especially when you’re about to reject yourself before anybody else …..
Raven’s Rejection Reset is free.
Keep the deck on your phone. Pick the card that matches whatever investigation your brain has opened today. Read it before you text, delete, apologize, disappear or make a decision based entirely on something that has not actually happened yet.
